eSafety

As a school, we embrace the benefits technology brings. However, as each generation becomes more tech-savvy, it is important that we are aware of the potential pitfalls that the opportunities provided by technology brings.

Parental filters are a simple way of preventing inappropriate content from reaching children. To find out how to apply them to multiple devices, please visit InternetMatters. It should be noted that these filters aren’t 100% secure and occasionally children will come across inappropriate content by accident. In such cases, research shows that it is best to remain calm and discuss the perils with the child.

Keeping computers and other internet ready devices within common family areas is another great way to be aware of what your children accesses.

Children will continue to use technology, likely with a greater competency than our own. Methods such as filtering only offer a limited protection. By having open discussions about concerns, we can educate children to be self aware of pitfalls regarding technology.

Next week we will be looking at this further in classes. As a precursor to this, it would be beneficial to discuss these matters with your children over the weekend
